The finished painting.  That's me, basically, as the Fedup delivery man in the foreground.
This is, once again, from my new book Billy Twitters and His Blue Whale Problem, written by Mac Barnett, available next month.

  1. I like that you put a self-portrait in this book. Your funny Adam Rex.

  2. Hee. Fed Up. That is funny. Instead of Where's Waldo, it's Where's Adam?!

  3. You should do that in every book.

  4. Alfred Hitchcock used to make cameo appearances in his movies, that's a pretty cool idea (and FedUp is a good one!)

  5. I can't wait for the book! The lighting is really nice, especially that little flicker of orange off to the left. Your extra details never go unnoticed.

  6. Hi adam! I have a question for ya... was this painted digitally, or with oils? Just curious. Thanks! :)

  7. I'm imagining you making a reference sculpture of yourself and then painting yourself in the book.

  8. Thank you Brian. What a big boy you're getting to be.

    Thanks, Kelly!

Heidi–I practically do. In some books it's easier to tell than others. In my book Ste-e-e-e-eamboat A-Comin'! I'm in there, like, twenty times.

    Nina–Good eeevening.

    I really appreciate that, Arrolyn!

Jennifer, this was painted in Photoshop with an Intuos tablet.

Stop giving away my methods, Santat.

  9. Adam, even your digital work has an amazingly painterly feel. I've been following your blog since your second Frankenstein book came out. Awesome, I must say.

  10. Brilliant. Enjoy your books very much. Unfortunately bought the Dirty Cowboy for an ex-girlfriend (see for myself) and then after she dumped me I didn't have the guts to demand it back. Bad move on my part. Just have to replace it I guess. Replaced her long ago.

    Big fan.

  13. I love the subtle, funny details in this, like "contents: whale" and "FedUp: delivering punishment worldwide." It's all very clever.
