Here's the finished painting of that sketch I posted last week. You may notice that I fixed a few drawing issues in the final–I'd done a pretty lousy job blocking in some of the houses in the background, and I think I had several horizon lines in play. I'm sure there are plenty more drawing mistakes where those came from, but I fixed a few of them, at least.
This is Photoshop and Wacom. No traditional painting in this book, though I'll be back to traditional materials with the following one.
Here are a couple details, including a bunch of cats that weren't in the sketch, but which I added at the suggestion of a friend of mine. I think it was Cyril.

Alas, still nary a mustache to be found!
Ah, well -- 'tis a great piece regardless. Can't wait for the book to be complete and in my grubby hands!
The cats are hilarious!
All these mustache promises and then nothin!
This is a great piece! I really like the texture for the whale. And the cats are a nice touch.
Wow. You could have fooled me with the Photoshop, sir! It looks just like your originals. Do you make your own brushes or deal with the ones Adobe hands out?
Love the cats chasing behind.
Thanks, guys.
Lunchbox, I just use the default Photoshop brushes–mostly one that I think is called No Center. I use a lot of jitter, noise, color jitter, etc.
Sweet! What went into the decision to go digital for this project? Speed? A particular visual quality? Variety? Other factors?
Z-Dad
Speed. And the ease at which you can fix mistakes and try new things.
Photoshop. One of us..... ONE OF US...... Speed is a huge reason why I do Photoshop, though, if it were up to me I'd try to paint everything as well.
dang that's good!!! it has the look of a layered painting
Very good idea for the cats ! it makes somthing living at the backgroung ! good job !

This is great! I, too, love the cats!
Wow, fun idea and great image! The kid on the bike is the best and fun to see all the little details going on in the piece!
No one sends Adam Rex snarky comments! Sorry, I just tuned into the drama. I personally love the mustache updates and how well the cause is going. Mustache aside, this piece is fantastic! As always you give us little details like the water trailing down, it's a really nice touch.
I love illustrations like that, where the more you look at them, the more details you notice. This is definitely one of those! That poor boy on the bicycle. :)
Haha, I love the cats. So funny. This is such a fun piece. Well done Senor Rex.
