Vacation

Vacation means you get to draw the Hulk in your sketchbook while the plane is landing into the Anchorage airport and no one can tell you, “Get back to painting panda bears.”

I know that doesn’t sound like much of a distinction but it meant a lot to me at the time.

(Disposable Bic pen and green Sharpie)

I’m in Alaska. My wife and I are taking a cruise with my parents, and right now we’re in the midst of a land tour. Today we passed through Wasilla and saw Sarah Palin’s old house. It’s a Lincoln-Loggy sort of place and not really the castle of frozen tears I was expecting.

Here’s an impromptu drawing of my mom, for which she will probably not be terribly grateful.

My mom is encouraged to remember that this was drawn in pen on a rattling motor-coach and that I was very tired.

Sweet sketches! I feel like smashing something...

The Lincoln-loggy exterior is just a cover for the dank caves of despair tunneled into the earth below, I suspect.

Enjoy the cruise! My family and I did an Alaskan cruise a few years ago and it was so beautiful it was unreal.

Great sketches. My Adam Rex collection is growing. "Tree Ring Circus" arrived from Amazon yesterday. Have a safe, trip. Maybe you'll see some orca.

I encourage you to take a helicopter ride on to a glacier. It's an amazing experience.

Thanks, everyone! I'd write more personal responses to everybody but I'm supposed to be off looking at Alaska right now.

Hey Adam. Funny, I'm on vacation in Oregon for ten days (missing earthquakes and hurricanes as I stand on windy beaches and tour volcanoes) and the very last thing I want to do on my vacation is draw. I brought my ukulele and books. Sometimes drawing is just work, man.
Enjoy Alaska. I hear it's not as hot there as Tucson.

I'll bet that your mom will put that picture you drew of her on her fridge when she gets home.
Enjoy the Alaskan cruise!
I went about ten years ago. Most amazing scenery. If you can, take the helicopter to a glacier tour!

Hey, you're close, Brian! Kind of. Actually you're probably like 2000 miles away.

Eman–I might be able to help if you email me with more specifics, but I don't actually have any clients in Arizona, so I don't know the market there any better than you do.

You know, Dan Santat said the same thing, Kelly.
